Hello! My name is Ryan Blackburn, and I have been humbled to take part in furthering my passion in public policy through the 2017-18 Independent Study and Mentorship program at Reedy High School. As a child, I have always found myself interested, whether it be in school or even at the dinner table, in rules; so much so I even broke a few a time or two! As I have matured, I have seen a growth in this interest as well. I am proud to say that I hold the stances I do on hot-button issues today, but am even more proud to have involved others in the discussion as well. It is one of my firmest beliefs that, as Americans, we should make use of the ability we are granted to be an active part in our government; as Thomas Jefferson suggests, it is critical we put forth our input for the greater good of not only those in our local community, but our nationwide family as well.
This reasoning is the catalyst for my independent study; I desire to understand more of how we, as private citizens, businesses, and nonprofits, all work to reform our policies towards a variety of issues. Indeed, each of us will undoubtedly become an integral part of an interest group, and learning how much of an impact we can make on policy can inspire the general public to take action. Motivated by the words of Thomas Jefferson and the opportunities available to me from this study, I am excited to expand this knowledge to others in hopes of truly reforming American voter culture and inspiring civic action throughout the American constituency. |
"The cornerstone of democracy rests on the foundation of an educated electorate."
- Thomas Jefferson
mission statement
Through the Independent Study and Mentorship program, I aspire to educate myself on the significance of confidence and outward leadership in an attempt to model these virtues. Demonstrating such ideals alongside elected public officials, I hope to understand more deeply the processes associated with state level government to aid in the fulfillment of my civic duties. In expanding my knowledge of the responsibilities associated with being an American citizen, I aim to reciprocate this knowledge to others and promote greater awareness of citizen involvement in governmental processes.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my passions and visions in the realm of state public policy! Feel free to take a look below at what the ISM program offers for hundreds of students across Frisco each year.
